Durability-focused fashion retailer Madewell has partnered with resale specialists ThredUp to launch a second hand store selling used products from the brand.
A Circular Store in Brooklyn, New York is stocked with used Madewell clothes sourced through ThredUp’s resale network. It merges retail with education about the unsustainability of fast fashion and services that help customers to look after their clothes so that they last longer.
A Circular Store includes a repair shop and a tailor to help customers get the most of their new purchases, while clean out kits can also be purchased, offering shoppers a range of products to help them maintain their clothes.
Educational and inspirational messages appear on in-store signage, while QR codes link to more content about the need to buy better clothes less often.
“We launched A Circular Store to reflect the future of circular fashion,” said Pooja Sethi, senior vice president and general manager of Retail as a Service, or RaaS, at ThredUP. “It’s one in which we reuse more than we produce new, and extend the life of clothes by making clothes to last, shopping second-hand, mending, and passing clothes on responsibly.
“Everything for sale in the store is second-hand Madewell sourced from thredUP. We’re excited to test and learn with this location, and Madewell is the perfect partner given our long standing relationship and shared commitment to extending the life of clothing.”
The store is initially a short-term pop-up, but may become permanent if successful.
The two brands already collaborate on the Madewell Forever ecommerce site, which also sells second hand Madewell clothing.
