Press freedom-focused NGO Reporters Without Borders has created a loophole to overcome censorship by building a safe haven for press freedom within the popular video game Minecraft.
The Uncensored Library is now accessible on an open server for Minecraft players around the world. The library (resembling a very large and rather pixelated version of one from the real world), is filled with books and articles that have been censored in their country of origin. These works are now available within Minecraft and can be read by everyone on the server.
New uses for virtual worlds like Minecraft’s that make up the Metaverse are being thought up frequently. Consumers can now buy and sell almost anything – including their own labour – within these virtual realms. The Uncensored Library represents another novel use of the Metaverse, to transcend physical borders and censorship in the spreading of information.
