Innovative Texas-based department store Neighborhood Goods has launched a new retail concept at its Austin location that it says will bring “interesting” hidden gems into physical retail for the first time.

The Marketplace will stock disruptive and game-changing consumer packaged goods products sourced from DTC brands online, as well as innovative products being sold by local restaurants in Austin.

“From our earliest days, we’ve been thinking about how to thoughtfully feature CPG products in our spaces,” said Matt Alexander, co-founder and CEO of Neighborhood Goods in a press release. “Like so many others, we find the CPG space to be exciting and compelling, but, as with many of our other brands, hard to find and sample in-person.”

The first brands to feature in The Marketplace include low-sugar DTC gummy BeHave, Jaden Smith’s socially conscious Just Water, soda alternative Swoon and Austin-based noodle favourite Chop Chop.

Interestingly, the chefs at Neighbourhood Good’s Prim and Proper restaurant have also created a new menu to celebrate some of the brands and ingredients that will be available to buy in The Marketplace, including Parlor coffee and DTC seasoning brand Fly by Jing.

“For so many of these brands, customers become aware of them through fleeting moments on Instagram,” added Alexander. “With our restaurants, we saw the opportunity to reframe these products in a more social context, allowing for people to enjoy some of the products through an elevated menu or, simply, while shopping our space with friends.”

Neighbourhood Goods intends to roll out The Marketplace concept to other locations if successful.
