Google has developed an ‘AI-powered dermatology assist tool’ that smartphone users will be able to use to scan their skin, hair or nails to identify possible conditions.

The tool is a web-based application that Google plans to launch later this year. The phone’s camera is used to scan the skin, hair or nails, before the user is asked a series of questions about the issue to help narrow down the list of possible diagnoses.

When a condition matches with the image and information presented by the user, the tool will launch dermatologist-reviewed information about the condition and answers to commonly asked questions about it, as well as a series similar matching images.

Google has stressed that this tool is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or to provide a diagnosis, rather as the first port of call in obtaining information, so users can make ‘a more informed decision about [their] next step’.
