Peruvian water brand Andea has launched a probiotic laundry soap designed to improve the cleanliness of Peru’s rivers and waterways.

In many parts of Peru, laundry washing is done in shallow rivers and streams. While still following a traditional custom, those washing laundry in Peruvian waterways often use modern laundry detergents, which has led to the water in them becoming contaminated.

To tackle this problem, mineral water brand Andea spent two years researching potential solutions, which culminated in AWA, a new laundry soap brand that adds a microorganism with a probiotic function to its soaps. As the soaps are used in the rivers, the microorganisms are released into the water and then feed on its pollutants, cleaning the water and making it safer to drink.

According to the brand, water samples taken before and after AWA soap was used indicated that the water quality had improved by up to 75%.

The soap is being distributed free of charge to villagers in rural areas of Peru, and Andea is inviting governments, environmental groups and other laundry care brands to help distribute the soap wherever it’s needed.

Andea worked with Fahrenheit DDB on the launch.
