Consumer electronics brand Candy has created a washing machine subscription service built around a smart proprietary washer that reorders detergent when it is running low.

Promoting the idea of access over ownership and specifically targeting renters in unfurnished apartments, customers rent, rather than own the Candy washing machine. After paying a one-off set-up fee of £69, the WashPass subscription costs £6.90 per month, as well as an additional 80p per wash, encouraging sustainable washing habits.

Outside of the subscription model, a key differentiator of WashPass is the washing machine itself. While traditional machines require customers to input the appropriate amount of detergent and fabric softener for each load, WashPass washers work more like printers, using four in-built tanks containing super-concentrated fabric care solutions. The washer automatically uses the correct amount of each solution based on the selected programme, which Candy claims makes the washing 70% more affective than using traditional detergent.

Another simplification for the user is the auto-replenishment aspect. The Wi-Fi connected washer can be set up to automatically reorder detergent when it is running low, via the Candy simpli.fi app. Refill tanks are included within the monthly service charge and are delivered to customers’ doors.

Within the simpli.fi app, customers can also receive notifications when their wash is done, while an image recognition feature invites users to take a picture of their load to receive a suggestion about which washing programme they should use.
