Pivot Yoga is a smart clothing line containing a system of small sensors that help users get their yoga moves right when practicing at home.
Users can take part in online yoga classes through the brand’s app, which connects wirelessly to the sensors in the clothing. The sensors run down the arms, legs and spine of the outfit, which allows the app to create a “live avatar” of the wearer, which maps the shape of their body. This allows the app to determine the quality of each yoga pose and to offer advice.
The app can be linked to a TV using an HDMI cable, which allows the user to see how their pose compares to that of the online instructor.
There are 16 sensors inside the clothes and the user’s body angles are recorded 50 times per second. At the start of each session users are asked to do a two-minute warmup, which allows the app to sync with the sensors.
The Pivot Yoga clothes are said to “look, feel, breathe, wash, and perform” like regular yoga clothes. They are made of leather, fabric, plastic, and aluminium and can be machine-washed in cold water. The clothes run on Wi-Fi and charge by Micro USB. A non-replaceable battery gives the clothes about five hours of continuous use.
The yoga top and pants cost $99, while the online videos cost $19 per month on an unlimited subscription basis. Pre-orders are available for residents in the United States and Canada and the clothes are expected to ship in spring 2019.
